From the article: "We must recognize--and I suppose most of
us do--that a scholarly literacy exists which, like other literacies,
empowers some as it silences others. The existence of an inevitable
scholarly literacy and various subliteracies is not wrong per se
and does not call for any sort of a reflex popularization of scholarship
that would eliminate all differences between academic writers, perhaps
turning access to journals into a lottery. . . . Whether the way that
those who are admitted and those who are excluded is fair is
another question, one that the respondents attempted to answer."
