Peter and the Monolith: A Psychoanalytic Study of a Case of Writer's Block

Nick Tingle

From the article: "Education is not always a comfortable process, nor should it be. But in such classes where the possibility of this wounding is implicit in the particular pedagogy, instructors must attempt empathetically to attune themselves to this possibility. This attunement may allow the instructor to respond to students' writings and comments in a more psychological way. Efforts might then be made to help stabilize those students who might suffer anxiety as they attempt honestly to question their beliefs, and more significantly, I believe, to insure that some students do not, in order to avoid the anxiety of questioning, fail to engage their beliefs at all."
